Museum Air Application / Control AirMyths and MonstersA silent Atlas Copco scroll compressor has been in constant use for four months at The Hancock Museum in Newcastle, England, to bring to life the grisly attractions of its "Myths and Monsters" exhibition.
As the air compressor, together with an Atlas Copco refrigerant dryer, had to run non-stop behind the scenes in an area where staff work, noise level and size were important issues when specifying the equipment. The Atlas Copco "SF4" rotary scroll compressor with its 65dB(A) noise level and its compact footprint was therefore an ideal choice. Another essential requirement was clean, dry compressed air. The SF4 scroll has a 100% oil-free operation and, coupled with the dryer, eliminates all risk of oil or moisture passing into the sensitive controls of the mythical monsters. "The compressed air equipment has been incredibly reliable. We haven't had even the tiniest problem with it," said Steve McLean, Curator of The Hancock Museum. "The scroll compressor runs as quietly and unobtrusively as a fridge." Between February and the beginning of June, around 55,000 people visited the "Myths and Monsters" exhibition at the Hancock Museum, which has received the runners-up place in the Visitor Attraction of the Year Award 2000. The animatronic monsters were created by Kokoro Co. Ltd, a Japanese based company, in collaboration with The Natural History Museum in London.
